Wero is coming to Luxembourg: a new European digital wallet from July 2026
Published on 05 January 2026
Luxembourg’s mobile payments landscape is set to evolve with the arrival of Wero, a new European digital wallet expected to be rolled out from July 2026. Featured in a recent educational report broadcast on RTL Télé, Wero will enable users to make instant transfers via smartphone and pay using QR codes. The solution is designed to offer a familiar experience for current users of mobile payment apps, while extending usability across a wider European network. The rollout of Wero in Luxembourg follows a strategic agreement between Payconiq International, Buckaroo and the European Payments Initiative (EPI). Wero is developed by EPI, an ambitious European initiative supported by 16 European banks and payment service providers, with the aim of delivering a unified mobile payment experience for consumers and businesses across Europe.
Summary
A strategic agreement to support continuity for merchants and consumers
Under the agreement, Payconiq’s direct merchant portfolio in Luxembourg is expected to transfer to Buckaroo in early 2026, subject to regulatory approval. Buckaroo will then enable Wero acceptance once the standalone Wero app goes live in Luxembourg.
This approach is intended to ensure a smooth and orderly migration for merchants, while supporting continuity of service for users during the transition period.
As the main acquirer in the country and key EPI shareholder, Worldline also confirmed to support the merchants in their acceptance of Wero.
What Wero will offer
For consumers, the shift is expected to be straightforward. Banks currently offering Payconiq are expected to introduce Wero during the summer and will inform customers ahead of time. This includes Spuerkeess, BIL, BGL BNP Paribas, POST Luxembourg and Raiffeisen.
As outlined in the official announcement, Wero is designed to deliver a feature-rich experience built on instant account-to-account payments, aligned with European standards of security and privacy.
For consumers, Wero is expected to provide:
- Instant payments and transfers, based on account-to-account infrastructure
- Strong security and privacy, aligned with European standards
- A simple and intuitive user experience within one dedicated wallet
- The ability to pay more easily across an expanding European network
For merchants, Wero will offer:
- Access to a unified European payment platform
- Faster settlement through instant payments
- Tools designed to support competitiveness in a digital-first economy

A European solution already gaining traction
Wero is already available for certain use cases in France, Belgium and Germany, with further rollouts planned across Europe. This broader reach is one of the key differentiating factors compared to domestic payment solutions and is designed to make cross-border payments more seamless for European consumers.
At European level, European Payments Alliance and EPI are exploring solutions for cooperation, with the objective of strengthening interoperability across European payment schemes.
